Layout Editor/Graphic Designer (Volunteer/Intern)
October Hill Magazine seeks an intern to take on the functions of a Layout Editor/Graphic Designer. The Layout Editor/Graphic Designer will work with the Managing Editor and Editorial Director to design graphics and lay out the publication before final issuance. This role will require approximately two to three hours or less of work per week. The Layout Editor/Graphic Designer's role will include creating graphics for social media, laying out the submissions for each issue (quarterly), and implementing design elements into the overall visual appeal of the publication.
October Hill Magazine was created as a platform for new and aspiring authors of short stories and poetry. The magazine has since broadened its offerings to include book reviews, photography, and illustrations.
General Overview of Duties:
- Under the supervision of the Managing Editor and Editorial Director, create graphics for social media platforms as well as for use in the final issue of the magazine.
- Quarterly, lay out the submissions (short stories, poetry, book reviews) according to October Hill standards and style guide. Includes organizing text in columns, making sure the lines are baselined, and adjusting the kerning as needed.
- Ensure that graphics and files are embedded and that the final PDF file is of manageable capacity to upload.
- Have a basic understanding of design and layout platforms such as Canva, Photoshop, InDesign.
- Understand what graphics can and cannot be used according to copyright laws, and an understanding of where to find usable graphics.

Assistant Poetry Editor (Volunteer/Intern)
October Hill Magazine seeks an intern to take on the functions of Assistant Poetry Editor. The Assistant Poetry Editor will work directly with the Lead Poetry Editor and Managing Editor to read, assess, and proofread new poetry submissions for the magazine each quarter. The intern should have some degree of familiarity with both modern and traditional poetry forms. No practical experience is necessary. This internship will require 10 hours or less of work per week.

General Overview of Duties
- Under the supervision of the Managing Editor, collaborate with the editors via Google Chat to determine publication schedule and assign submissions to review.
- Attend and participate in poetry editor staff meetings every two weeks.
- Be prepared to discuss comments/suggestions about submissions.
- Review/edit 50-200 poems quarterly.
- Be an ambassador and champion of the publication to increase reach and bring in new authors.

Assistant Short Story Editor (Volunteer/Intern)
October Hill Magazine seeks an intern to take on the functions of Assistant Short Story Editor. The Assistant Short Story Editor will work directly with the Lead Short Story Editor and Managing Editor to read, assess, and edit new submissions for the magazine each quarter. The intern should have some degree of familiarity with copyediting, proofreading, developmental editing, and the ability to provide editorial critiques. Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style is a plus. No practical experience necessary. This internship will require 10 hours or less of work per week.
